Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale (3DS) Review

Attack of the Friday Monsters - A Tokyo Tale

Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale comes from publisher Level 5 Studios. They have brought us other amazing titles such as Ni No Kuni, the Professor Layton series, The Starship Damrey, and Bugs VS Tanks! Level 5 has an amazing track record with their other games and have proven that they can make awesome games on the Nintendo platform. Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale is set in suburban Tokyo during the 70’s where you play as Sohta a ten year old boy. Sohta is a transfer student who has several different hobbies which include watching superhero shows and also playing a game of Monster Cards.

A game of Monster Cards is relatively simple and it reminds me of a game of Pokemon cards where each card has a specific character and a number on it displaying what level it is. These cards can also be combined together to form a higher number, but that also means you will have less cards and you need 5 to play Monster Cards. The game also runs kind of like a play on rock, paper, scissors. These are also how you beat your opponent for each card. Besides playing games you will find that monsters visit the town on Friday nights as they leave footprints in the town. The story also adds a lot of other plot points that I don’t want to ruin for the reader.

The gameplay is pretty straight forward. You will take small quests or checkpoints that help Sohta through the game, these can be tackled in anyway by talking to anyone of the characters. As a ten year old boy you will discover a lot since that’s what kids do, they like to discover. To move around the map you will need to complete certain quests. You’ll move to other parts and pick up gems that will help you get monster cards. The graphics won’t wow you by any means, but are perfect for the time period and for Japan the 3D effects are nicely done as well. I don’t see myself playing the game again, this is more of a one play-through game in my opinion, but you are really getting your money’s worth. This game is at a clock time of around 2 and half hours and you can pick this title up on the Nintendo eShop for $7.99.

Final Verdict: Attack of the Friday Monsters! A Tokyo Tale is a great title to pick up off the eShop. It’s nice to be able to sit back on an afternoon and just play something relaxing. The plot’s points do get a little bit far-out but you get value out of the overall experience. If you have the chance I would recommend you get this for your Nintendo 3DS. This game gets a 7.6 out of 10 from RealGamerNewz and has earned itself an RGN Rating of Bronze.
