Yoshi’s New Island 3DS Review

largeYoshi’s Island has been a classic since its drop on the SNES systems in 1995, selling over 4,000,000 copies worldwide. The game keeps to the core when it comes to the series and maintains same format of other Nintendo games. Yoshi’s New Island is the sequel to the original storyline and was released for the Nintendo 3DS earlier this month.

The story starts where the last game left off in the original game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island with the stork trying to get Baby Mario and Baby Luigi to the correct set of parents. They are suddenly accosted by Kamek and his Toadies of Bowser and they try to kidnap Baby Luigi and Baby Mario. When this happens they drop Baby Mario in the tussle and successfully kidnap Baby Luigi. Baby Mario finds himself safe and sound, for the time being, under the protection of Yoshi and his family. After this the player is sent on a journey with Baby Mario on the back of Yoshi and family members on a mission to save Baby Luigi from Baby Bowser and get them back to their family before Kamek steals both brothers.

This game follows the same format of other Mario and Mario spin off games from Nintendo. The player plays multiple levels to complete the world ending with a boss level, and beating multiple worlds before reaching the end. There are two ways to play this game on the 3DS. There is the classic story mode and a two-player mini-game mode to play with other people who also have the game on their 3DS. The designers kept the same type of art and graphics direction as previous Yoshi games with the graphics looking as though it is hand drawn and painted.

The game closely follows all of the same controls as the original Yoshi’s Island game with all the same moves with the addition of one feature; Mega Eggdozers. Mega Eggdozers are larger than the usual Yoshi eggs and they are used to bust through pipes and walls to get to extra goodies and the rest of the path. While playing the player must not only get around all of the obstacles and bad guys but they must also keep Baby Mario on their backs every time. If Yoshi takes a hit they lose Baby Mario and must go catch him in a certain amount of time before Kamek comes and captures him.

For gamers who really enjoy Mario and Friends games should play this. The game is really fun and an interactive game with a multitude of challenges and places to explore. The storyline is fun and the added Mega Eggdozers are a great addition to the moves in this game. This seems to be a worthy sequel to the first game that was so popular in the late 90’s and can be played by new gamers and veteran gamers alike. With all the different nooks and crannies that this game holds it adds hours of fun and adventure to truly find everything making it a worthwhile investment for a gamers’ collection and something to go back to for hours of more fun
