Broken Age is a point and click adventure game, sounds fun already. It tells the story of a young boy and girl living parallel lives to each other without knowledge. A girl living in a village, a boy living in a spaceship. The girl is selected as the next to be sacrificed to a monster, but she refuses. While the boy is living alone only with a computer, I guess you could say is mom to watch him, but he wants to get away and live adventures of his own.
Story: Shay the boy, could possibly be the last human alive in his side of the story and he is a mystery. Then Vella, a young woman, that will not accept her fate as some sacrifice for a beast. The story is filled with humor, sad moments, huge plot points, and action. Both stories are on a very personal level in their lives, seems as if they want you to really, really think they are real and in front of you but as cartoons. The whole overall plot of the first act is near flawless, the story carries itself in a statement manner.
Gameplay:Â As stated earlier Broken Age is a point and click adventure game. There are some puzzles, things to click and such. Games like this are all about the story and atmosphere surrounding them. The puzzles in this game are ok, not really a challenge just really to give players something to do.
Soundtrack/Voice:Â The music in the game is astounding. It has a specific sound to it that I can not describe with words. It just really gives you a sense of immersion. You see how it all comes together while playing the certain scene when a track is on. With voice actors like Elijah Wood and Wil Wheaton on board in the game, you already know how good the acting will be. Masassa Moyo plays Shay very well, while Shay is voiced by none other then the boy Elijah, you know from the Lord of the Rings and Wilfred? Even people like Jennifer Hale, Jack Black, and Nicki Rapp have roles in the game.
Graphics/Art Style:Â As you can already tell the art style is of a cartoonish one. Featured in 2D but also being in HD so it looks crystal clear. So far one of the best looking games of this art style of game I have seen. It is up there with Paper Mario, Rayman, and Battleblock Theater in terms of the art.
Replay Ability:Â High
Final Verdict: While playing Broken Age Act 1 at first I was little weary of it, but once I was in I could not stop for a while. The game is highly immersive with a wonderfully crafted story, great voice talent, awesome visuals, and so much more. Double Fine’s Broken Age Act 1 gets a 9.8 out of 10.
