From the moment you start up Godus, things are mysterious and quite wondrous. You’ll slowly be taught exactly what’s going on at whatever pace your believers grow at. You are essentially playing as a higher power that exists and is believed in by the inhabitants of the world which you can influence. You’re able to interact with the world by doing things like chopping down trees and reforming the landscape around to give your believers some new ground to colonize, but be careful as you may accidentally destroy some of your believers shelter in the process. You also need to click on your own followers / believers from time to time as your influence is necessary to keep them alive. They’ll sometimes die on their own as well from accidentally walking off the land or what appear to be spontaneous health problems.
As your people advance, you’ll receive cards that indicate the progress they are making towards living lives with greater meaning. As more followers believe in you, more and more of an area will open up for them and for you to inhabit. The cards you receive will be a part of the process as well, as they often indicate what is required to proceed. As you continue to mind your following and encourage their advancement, the overall map size will increase. You’ll start off with one small island and need to eventually create a land bridge to connect that to other land masses which you’ve unlocked by keeping everyone progressing through evolution accordingly.
Things start off slow and simple in Godus but quickly become fast-paced as you balance between collecting Belief, re-spawning believers, keeping the sleepy ones alive, and expanding your people’s territory. Totems will direct them all to go to one specific place, which is very useful when you’re ready for them to move on. Eventually you’ll unlock abilities like Champion (turning followers to warriors), Beautify (causing an area to bloom with aesthetically pleasing vegetation therefore encouraging followers to populate the area), and even the ability to rain meteors down causing rampant destruction.
Godus even features a multiplayer mode where players go head to head to see who can be the best higher power. For example you might play a 1 versus 1 match in which two players build head to head to see who can raise the largest population within a certain time limit. This strategic multiplayer game challenges your mastery of the game’s mechanics, speed, and willpower to drive your believer count well beyond your opponent’s.
Godus is currently a work in progress which you can gain Early Access to through Steam’s Early Access Pre-Order program. With updates being rolled out from developer 22Cans, it remains a constantly evolving experience being tweaked and added to regularly.
