Hero of the Kingdom Review

Hero of the Kingdom

Hero of the Kingdom starts out with a tutorial that guides players through some of the basic functions of the game and introduces them to the art style to be expected further down the line as well. The player’s family farm burns down once the tutorial completes, forcing an adventure that holds many challenges. At its core Hero of the Kingdom is a point-and-click adventure. In reality though, point-and-click adventures have never really gone this far with item accumulation and bartering being key elements the player focuses on as well as resource gathering.

Doki Doki Universe PS4 Review – A Journey Of Self Discovery

Doki Doki Universe starts off by introducing the main character, a robot who has been abandoned by his family for being outdated. The overall task which players will spend the rest of the game working towards is then presented, this robot must get Humanity training and pass Alien Jeff’s reports or be sentenced to de-construction (along with all other robots that share the same model number as it). “Humanity is about understanding others” is the advice players are greeted with.

Ace of Spades: Battle Builder Post-Mortem Review

Ace of Spades RealGamerNewz PC Review

Ace of Spades is a PC Game available on Steam which released a short while back and has been on the tip of my tongue for some time now. With Minecraft landing on more platforms than ever, it is important that gamers of all types are aware of this alternative gameplay option. While Minecraft focuses on creation of worlds and role playing while surviving the wild, Ace of Spades is essentially Minecraft with guns but a lot more than that at the same time.

Blackguards (Hands-On) Preview

The Dark Eye Blackguards Preview - RealGamerNewz - Daedalic Ent

In Blackguards players start off on the wrong side of the law with little to no understanding of what was reality and what was fantasy. The main character witnesses a strange wolf, which almost seems possessed, killing a princess he knew well and was sworn to protect. When he’s killed the beast though the princess lays on the ground with blood all around her and there is now no wolf to be seen. The player is discovered and amongst the confusion hears a voice whisper out to him. Taking the blame for what happened, unsure of who is really responsible for what happened, and tortured in the pain of imprisonment both within his mind as well as literally Blackguards begins with the player on a quest for answers. Tiny Brains PS4 Review

Tiny Brains PS4 RealGamerNewz Review 2

Tiny Brains on PlayStation 4 is about the experimental procedures of a scientist who has constructed some miniature and intelligent beings. This means players take the role of four test subjects each with their own powers. Every character is needed in their own way for solving the puzzles that this strange science experiment presents them with and they are color coded. When a session has less than four people playing players can swap between different characters at will. Each is color coded to help the player remember their power and in addition to voice chat players can communicate with each other by using the DualShock 4′s touch pad to point out areas they are trying to explain. The color coding also lights up differently on each controller based on which character the player currently has selected.

Angry Birds: Star Wars PS4 Review

Angry Birds: Star Wars doesn’t exactly contain a story or plot-line, but it does fine enough without one. Of course, any sort of Star Wars story would have had to be perfectly in line with lore behind the series as to appease fans almost OCD-like obsession with the source material while at the same time fitting the simplicity of being applicable to the genre of game this is, so that would have been extremely challenging for Rovio Entertainment to incorporate anyways. That being said, it sure wouldn’t have hurt to have some reason why you were doing these things other than the sheer fun of it.

IndieSpotlight: Assault Android Cactus

Assault Android Cactus - Steam Early Access - PS4

I recently have had the pleasure of e-meeting the developers behind an incredible new twin-stick shooter called Assault Android Cactus which is currently available on Steam Early Access (and as a playable demo) and will arrive on the PS Vita, PlayStation 4, and Wii U as well as provide support for Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows PC Gaming platforms. After getting my own two hands on the title and speaking in-depth with Witch Beam about AAC I can definitely say that what makes this game stand out from others gunning for attention right now is the love and care the devs have put into it. With a real focus on platform specificity too, this is not just a game getting ported around but rather having tailor fit versions for each machine it ends up landing on. In the following article I will describe some of the discussions I had with Witch Beam in regards to Assault Android Cactus and also what each platform of gamer can expect out there. Later this week keep your eyes out for my hands-on Preview as well.

RealGamerNewz Interviews PlayStation 4′s Basement Crawl Developers Bloober Team

Basement Crawl PS4 INDIE Interview - RealGamerNewz

Although we have had a little bit of trouble tracking down Bloober Team and securing an interview with them, our recent Basement Crawl Article previewing currently released information on their exclusive PS4 title Basement Crawl (releasing soon) caught the attention of Marc Colhoun who actually contacted us in the comments section of that very post leading to the following interview taking place. *Answers are unedited and uncensored thoughts of the developer, questions asked by myself, Jon Ireson (Editor-In-Chief).

RealGamerNewz: What’s it like working with Sony?

Bloober Team: Sony has been really great with us throughout the whole process of development with any questions that we had and even helping us with marketing.

RealGamerNewz: In what ways does Basement Crawl deviate from the classic retro game that inspired it?

Bloober Team: Basement Crawl is definitely inspired by a few things, we all love Bomberman here and we did take some inspiration from there but we were also inspired by grindhouse movies and I think that it shows in the final product. The way we set out to change this is that we have really brought this nostalgic feeling into a modern setting with modern mechanics and a very nice graphic style. On top of all this we really wanted to create the best multiplayer experience possible, so be it online or local, our game will fill the gap where the current titles out there seem to be falling short.

RealGamerNewz: How many hours have you personally put into playing the game while developing it?

Bloober Team: That is a really tough question actually… I have no idea, but really a lot. It is really addictive.

RealGamerNewz: What’s the most hilarious moment that occurred in development of Basement Crawl?

Bloober Team: Probably the day after GIK (http://gamesinvestkrakow.com/). Watching a full office of people hungover attempting to work is pretty great.

RealGamerNewz: Does Bloober Team have any interest in creating Basement Crawl DLC some day? If not, how about a sequel?

Bloober Team: We are currently discussing the future of Basement Crawl and what we feel we should do to support those who choose to pick it up. We aren’t sure exactly what just yet… but we will support the game with extra content after the release.

RealGamerNewz: Will Bloober Team work on New IPs after this game? (spoiler alert: RealGamerNewz LOVES New IPs)

Bloober Team: We are working on something extremely unique and really exciting that I, unfortunately, can’t talk about right now. (expect some content very soon though).

RealGamerNewz: Are there any hints at all (even a one word obscure tease) which you can provide for the project your team will provide after Basement Crawl?

Bloober Team: Half.

RealGamerNewz: What is your favorite game of all time?

Bloober Team: I really am not sure about this… I remember the feeling I got the first time I played Deus Ex and it blew me away, so I am tempted to say that but generally anything that gives me a bow and arrow gets much love from me.

RealGamerNewz: How did you discover the RealGamerNewz article about Basement Crawl?

Bloober Team: At Bloober Team we think that if someone has written about our company or one of our games, the least we can do is write to them and thank them as well as talking with their community and answering any and all questions that they have for us.

RealGamerNewz: Thank you for your time, one last question! When is the release date of Basement Crawl!? :)

Bloober Team: Basement Crawl will be released for PS4 at the beginning of 2014, we will fill the gap in really addictive and fun local and online multiplayer games.

***Editor’s Note: If you have any questions for the devs at Bloober Team be sure to leave them in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to get them answered! RGN over and out!!!

Proteus Post-Mortem Review

proteus title

Proteus is an indie developed game by a team of two individuals by the names of Ed Key and David Kanaga. To call it a game is unfair, as it is more of an experience. It was released in January of this year for Steam and October for Vita and PS3. This review is based on the Steam version. It plays smoothly on low-end PCs.

Doki Doki Universe RealGamerNewz Interview

We recently had the pleasure of speaking to Greg Johnson from Human Nature Studios who developed the recently released PlayStation 3 / Vita / PS4 game Doki Doki Universe (our review coming soon) about a myriad of topics. In the following brief but deep interview we offer you a brand new look inside the minds behind this fresh and original take on video games as a medium of expression and indeed an art form. *Answers are unedited and uncensored thoughts of the developer, questions asked by myself, Jon Ireson (Editor-In-Chief).

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate HD Review

Castlevania Mirror of Fate HD Review - RealGamerNewz

Mirror of Fate HD is the console port of Konami’s Nintendo 3DS title which installed the Lords of Shadow series into the handheld console. Mirror of Fate is not a 3D action adventure title like Lords of Shadow though, and instead harkens back to the good old days when Castlevania was a 2D open world type of game. With a less linear approach to things, Mirror of Fate HD extends the Castlevania: LoS series into the 2D world with 3D character models as well as other assets including backgrounds fleshed out with new age graphical techniques.

Knack PS4 Review

Story: Knack opens up with a simple plot that expands into a really incredible story which is solid and easy to absorb. Goblins are attacking human settlements, and your roster of characters must find out why. The dark ones who play the role of antagonist alternates between two forces throughout the title, one being the goblin menace race who holds a grudge against humanity after the crystal wars of the past and the other being the billionaire science zealot who wants to use the power of an ancient technology called the relics to control the world (in the guise of doing it for our own good). There’s also a third party involved which are the guardians of the relics and their technological secrets. The character you play as is Knack who is a creation of the good doctor based on the technology of those same ancient relics. He is a being brought into consciousness who is capable of becoming larger by bringing more objects into his physical dominion which almost resembles a mastery of magnetism.

IndieSpotlight: Superlumina: First Contact iOS

Superlumina iPhone Review - RealGamerNewz

Intro:

RealGamerNewz had the recent opportunity to speak with the developers behind Superlumina about what was going through their minds when they put together Superlumina: First Contact for the iOS platform. While visually the game may resemble something like chess in space, the concepts behind the title prove to be far more deep than that. Superlumina: First Contact’s subtitle also plays on the fact that mankind has for the first time stepped out of the confines of our own galactic neighborhood and found life on other planet mid-war. Now our species must strategically navigate through such a treacherous universe our own way. Perhaps surprisingly, First Contact also plays on the fact that Superlumina is a taste of things to come as the developers behind the title revealed to me that the game is a first initiation into an entirely new and vast universe years in the making. Read on to learn a deep understanding of how Superlumina: First Contact on iOS works and what kind of universe it takes place in.

Basement Crawl PS4 EXCLUSIVE INDIE Preview – RealGamerNewz

Basement Crawl PS4 INDIE Preview - RealGamerNewz

Basement Crawl is a PlayStation 4 Exclusive Indie game hitting the PlayStation Network very soon which takes influence from the classic age of gaming. In this polish developed title the gameplay consists of multiplayer madness in which players find themselves navigating mazes such as the one seen above. Online up to 8 players face off (or in your living room up to 4 on one console) setting traps for each other and trying to avoid them in Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch modes with specific abilities and characters of their choosing. There is also an artificial intelligence that can be faced as well. Overall, the game is clearly one that should look very familiar to many of us gamers who’ve been around the block a few times, and have been gaming since the start of this glorious industry.

Super Motherload PS4 Review

Super Motherload PS4 Review RGN

Super Motherload is an indie game being offered on the PlayStation Network for Sony’s next-generation PS4. The game shows heavy inspiration from the classic retro title Dig Dug and adds layers of objectives to the digging experience. Things aren’t as hum drum as they seem. Beneath the surface of Mars are endless amounts of valuable and useful materials that must be collected for the betterment of mankind as well as the fattening of your pockets. But there’s also sinister experiments going on down there. What’s going on may shock you and will certainly be unexpected in what otherwise appears to be a simple retro reboot of the Dig Dug gameplay style.

The New Way to Play God — Godus Hands-On Preview

Godus Gameplay Screenshot 1

From the moment you start up Godus, things are mysterious and quite wondrous. You’ll slowly be taught exactly what’s going on at whatever pace your believers grow at. You are essentially playing as a higher power that exists and is believed in by the inhabitants of the world which you can influence. You’re able to interact with the world by doing things like chopping down trees and reforming the landscape around to give your believers some new ground to colonize, but be careful as you may accidentally destroy some of your believers shelter in the process. You also need to click on your own followers / believers from time to time as your influence is necessary to keep them alive. They’ll sometimes die on their own as well from accidentally walking off the land or what appear to be spontaneous health problems.

Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver Review

Hot Wheels Worlds Best Driver RealGamerNewz Review

At the risk of sounding like a meme, if you played with Hot Wheels then you had an awesome childhood. For those of us who came up during the golden age of pretty much everything from toys to video games, Hot Wheels were one of the favorites. In Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver you’ll approach the most interesting concepts brought forth by the original toy franchise as well as some of gaming’s best racing game mechanics in a journey to become the world’s best driver.

The first step you’ll take on this journey is selecting a color-coded team, each with their own primary focus (for example Green Team = Speed, Blue Team = High Tech) and then the racing begins. You’ll be able to switch between teams at any time and also unlock special abilities using tokens earned through in-game challenges. Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver is expectedly focused on fun factor rather than realism and will see players chaining together drifts for miles, drifting on two wheels for hundreds of feet, performing deadly neck-breaking jumps, driving up and drifting across walls, and even more across a variety of locations that does a good job of preventing any amount of boredom normally associated with racing titles.

Gameplay: Racing and drifting are the most fun parts of the game by far. Precision driving events can be very frustrating at times, but also rewarding, and will eventually mold you into a better drive throughout the game. Stages such as tracks that become more and more narrow as time goes are easier to appreciate than the events that see you tediously navigating through complex precision courses with lots of stopping, jumping, and turning around.

Hot Wheels Worlds Best Driver RealGamerNewz Review 2

There are also some really interesting events that have you doing things like stopping a 200mph speeding vehicle as close as you can to a finish line using a parachute and perfect timing. Overall the gameplay is very smooth, easy to get into, and most of all fun. The variety of so many different things to do in the game make it an experience that doesn’t get stale, and you’ll probably get more enjoyment than you might have expected from the brand we all grew up as kids playing with. There’s over 50 challenges in the game as well as a multiplayer mode and you can customize 24 different vehicles. Medals are earned and tracked in addition to stat-tracking across the four different teams you’ll play as with various ways of completing each event.

Controls: Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver handles really well. You don’t need to be an expert at driving cars in order to enjoy this game. While the racing genre is heading towards a hyper-realistic standard, even for arcade racers, Hot Wheels brings it back to the pure enjoyment that all gamers can appreciate with the added bonus of over-the-top gameplay like riding up a wall or going through crazy tracks reminiscent of the actual Hot Wheels toy tracks. There’s nothing to really complain about in terms of controls, players of all skill levels should have no problem picking the game up and eventually mastering it.

Graphics / Art Direction: There are a number of different tracks in this game and each one has a different look and theme to it. Throughout this racing title you’ll be treated to a high production value in terms of graphics and vibrant, refreshing displays with attentive art direction delivered. Firebrand Games has definitely surpassed expectations in this department showing their mastery of current gen console hardware.

Soundtrack, Audio, Voice: The soundtrack in this game is the upbeat tempo stuff you’d expect to find in a racing game but what’s really cool is that often times the music has samples and sounds that are familiar to the video game industry. The audio of the vehicles sounds clear and appropriate, which is great since audio is important to the feel of a racing game. The voices can sometimes be annoying but they are also an important part of this game since they inform you of what’s going on and what you’re supposed to be doing. Thanks to the voice-overs provided in this game, you’ll never be confused or stuck wondering what’s going on, which enables you to enjoy the game in a streamlined manner and worry about your gameplay not reading instructions.

Hot Wheels Worlds Best Driver RealGamerNewz Review 3

Multiplayer Aspect: Up to 4 players can take part in local ‘Hot Seat Mode’ multiplayer on one console in a pass-the-controller style fashion.

Replay Ability: High

Engine Performance, Physics, Glitches: The physics in the game is loosely based on that of real life racing but takes many liberties in pushing it more towards the arcade / fantasy side of things. You’ll get a good balance which leans mostly towards fast driving, easy to master drifting, and also enjoy ridiculous feats that could never be accomplished in real life such as driving sideways across walls, over insane ramps, and more. There were no glitches encountered in our play-through of Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver and the game engine performed quickly and with stability.

Final Verdict: Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver is a great game, there’s really not much you can complain about with this racing title. We would have liked to see a full story mode / campaign added, and that led to a less than perfect score, however we definitely recommend this game to anybody that is looking for a pick-up-and-play experience capable of providing a good fun factor. The title is also age appropriate for all members of the family with the ‘E for Everyone’ rating by the ESRB. The graphics, sounds, game engine, and fun factor all come together to make a well polished product from Firebrand Games and Warner Bros. Interactive earning it an impressive 9 out of 10 making it a Gold Game on the RealGamerNewz Rating Scale.

Overall Score: 9/10

RGN Rating: Gold Game

Developer: Firebrand Games Warner Bros. Interactive

Publisher: Warner Bros. Interactive

Handheld Version Available On: DS / 3DS
